Good morning! I hope this update finds you all having a great day!
As many of you who are reading this know that yesterday I was surprised by an admission to the hospital. I was starting to feel some better on Monday and actually did go to work on Tuesday, but was having some issues with a low blood pressure, so on the advice of my sweet and smart husband, I called the doctor. She requested that I come in for some IV fluids and labs, told the girls at work be back in a bit....well, my labs showed that I had an extremely low white count...so was admitted to the hospital. Started on IV fluids and antibiotics (precautionary). I kind of left my desk a mess, even have my lunch sitting out:)....sorry Trisha and Jodie, thanks for being so understanding...I only hope some day that I can make it up to you.
A great big and special thanks to Tom and Laurie for being there...you both are our angels on earth!
Thanks also for Rhonda for sitting with me and all her encouragement. I was also blessed by a visit from my parents, what a nice treat!
Sometimes I wonder in amazement at God's timing of events, when in the infusion center, I was blessed to meet the absolutely most delightful woman who is also going through treatment for breast cancer. Her attitude and grace filled me with hope.
When speaking with the oncologists, I learned that with the way my body has responded to chemo...this is going to be a bit more of a challenge than we first anticipated. I feel real sad that I must burden my family and friends with my journey. Please know if there was any other way....
I did have a spiritual "ah ha" moment today. Although at times through this journey, I will admit that I have struggled with God's purpose and plan with breast cancer diagnosis and treatment..not doubting, just wondering,...today I realized, I just need to trust...doesn't really matter if I understand "the plan" or even approve of the "the plan"...it is okay to just trust in Him, knowing that He loves and cares for me every step of the way.(ah,ha) In the book I am reading by Stormie Omartin she talks about whenever we go through difficult times, we anticipate the coming moment when all the pressure is off, the worry has subsided, the healing has manifested, the sadness has lifted, and the pain is gone. We continuously look for God to take away the discomfort we are experiencing. But God wants us to know that even as we wait for those changes to happen, His light is there all the time shining into our darkness. He wants us to trust that, and open our eyes to see it. Thank you Lord for helping me to see this today! Praises also that I was able to find out about my low count before I contacted an infection.
Thanks for your prayers on behalf of my family and myself. May you all have a delightful day!

Just a quick update to let everyone know that I was able to come home late this afternoon. I am on "house arrest" through the weekend, as my white count is still low.
Thanks so much to everyone for their prayers and support! Thanks also for the kind words written on the guest book and the emails.
Hope everyone is doing well!

In the book of Matthew 10, Christ says, “Not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs of your head are numbered. So don’t be afraid, you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” Wow, was this verse brought to reality in our home…
Ever since our children were little we had a tradition of Friday night pizza and as we all know as our children grow and leave our nest, some traditions fall away. Well, last night at the Vander Poel’s the tradition took place. All of our children were home to celebrate each other with pizza, take family pictures and cut mom’s hair. We had many giggles, especially when we sat there waiting for the timer on the camera to go off and Brett had actually pressed video….yup, took us a bit to catch on to that one. We also shared some tears. (The tears were mostly mine). I am so blessed that my family gave me the gift of time and walked with me through a pretty tough day. Yes, I know hair is a physical thing and yes, it will grow back…I think for me the most challenging part, is that I keep feeling I am being stripped of who I am…first the invasion of cancer, than the mastectomy, then a challenging first round of chemo, “house arrest”, and now the hair…with still a long road to go…After the kids left, I had one of the hardest cry fests of my life, not feeling sorry for myself, just a deep grief for the challenges a cancer patient faces. My first thought when I woke this morning was “daughter, I know the pain was very real, now use it to help others…” Sometimes life is yucky with lots of hurts, but God is just waiting for us to call out to Him, so He can be our Father and provide the comfort and care like only a daddy can give his little ones.
On top of the hair thing, we were blessed yesterday by having a very dear friend come and clean our home. My parents raised us to be hard workers, taking pride in what we do, so having to have someone come help me do “my job” was a huge challenge to my character…bless you Kathy for helping a sister in her walk.
This morning, my sweet husband and I have a date…yes, I am leaving house arrest for a bit, but promise to stay just in my mustang, so shouldn’t be exposed to any germs…we are going to have a breakfast picnic at Newton Hills (state park only 20 minutes from here) and give my hair clippings to the birds. Thinking those birds are going to have some pretty cool nests this spring! So you can see how Matthew 10 has been our reality the last 24 hours…and I am so blessed because I do believe and know how valuable I am to our Lord. It is my prayer today, that all of you who read this, also know how much He loves you too!
Again, thanks so much for everything…food, cards, emails…much appreciated. “House arrest” can feel a little isolating so I am really appreciating the guest book entries and emails. Thanks!

Good Morning! Thanks so much for the prayers and good thoughts yesterday. I was able to go through with my first round of chemo without any anxiety or tears. Here is a quick recap of the day. My mom, Ferlin and I meet with oncologists first to talk about the plan, side effects, etc. Than I had chemo, I am blessed as I have a port where they can run the meds through, so I just have a quick stick and that is all the pain. I had a few premeds: one for nausea and one steroids (helps with reaction/nausea)...I than had the Adriamyacin (red devil is what they refer it to) and than I Cytoxin. We were pleasantly surprised and done by 130ish. Thanks to my special visitors: my mom, Laurie, Mary Dean and Pastor Allen. You all helped me forget for the moment what was going on, your encouragement and support was great. Laurie, I hear your cookies were awesome, wish I could have tried them, tried to have a pepsi (definately one of my loves) and was only able to have a few sips...so I knew that something was hitting faster than they told me I should get hit. We spent the rest of the day and evening at home. We had a few visitors, Jane and Mike (thankyou for goodie bag) and kalina and Steven (thanks for helping out with kelsey--your awesome.) Speaking of Kalina and Steven--they are going to bless us with a grandson in June--can hardly wait!
Please know that it bothers me to even have to share how yucky this chemo crap is, I don't like attention on myself and this it is humblying to have to ask for prayers. However, I do know where my stength comes and do know who the ultimate healer is...I have also learned in my christian journey that sometimes it helps to have more specific prayers. So for those who are praying, Please pray that my heart rate will come back to normal (it has been running steadily between 120-145, with my normal of 80's)...really a challenge for me to do anything without getting real short of breath and weak legged. I have had a head ache since tx (which is a side effect of one of the meds.) and of course the typical nausea, horrible taste in mouth and decreased appetite. I have decided I don't like chemo and it don't like me! I do love life and love so many people that going through this pot hole and getting rid of cancer will be worth it in the end.
I love my computer, cellphone and books...well last night, I turned off my computer and cell phone, layed on couch to watch tv--Ferlin was getting a little panicky as this is something I have never done. So, if you try and call me and get my voice mail, please leave a message and I will try and call you back. It is easier for me to email at this time, so hoping I will be able to keep up with responses.
Thanks again for everyone's love, care and support. Much appreciated! Please know that I am praying for you all as you walk your days!

Happy Valentine's Day! I hope everyone was able to share their love with their "special" someone's!
Well, I wish I was able to write to you all and tell you that chemo and I handled each other well, but NOT!! I struggle to write my feelings as I am generally a really positive person, who try's to shield others from the "yuckiness" of life. The last few days have been a challenge for all of us at our home. I am still struggling with aweful nausea and a fair amount of fatigue. Kelsey is being a great help by making meals for her mom. We should have taken stock out in Betty Crocker Mashed potatoes. Hoping for a better day tomorrow. I have been able to squeese a bit of work in between naps.
Thank you all for your prayers, support, cards and phone calls. Much appreciated!
Ps. just looked out our window and saw a hot air balloon...I just love them and the site of it brought a great big smile....whenever I see a hot air balloon it reminds me of God and His love for us! Helps me know that there are brighter days a coming!

Happy Monday! I truely hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.
Have I told you how blessed I am? Although this weekend made me realize that I am very weak and truely in a fight for restored health, I am so blessed to have so many praying and caring on my behalf. I am so thankful that God has placed all of you on my path. Thanks for the calls and visits. My apologies to anyone if my words have been a little "shorter" and for complaining about not feeling well. I don't like this part of my personality, especially as I have always told my kids to "tough" it up!
Although I love my job, I am glad today is a holiday. I was able to wash my hair and get dressed for the day (only took an hour:) and several sit downs. Hopefully tomorrow will find me with lots of energy and no nausea so I can do a good job at work. (think I am still dreaming.)
Ferlin and I were talking this morning that it is sometimes so easy as christians to by "pollyannish" when our lives are going along great...what a different level your walk brings when you are too weak to even pray for yourself...thankfully we can remember the trust or our Lord and His promise to never leave us. Think that is where I was at on Saturday, feeling pretty darn yucky and than all of a sudden I looked out the window and saw the most beautiful hot air balloon. Don't ask me why, but I just love those things (never had a desire to ride in one, but just watching them, tickles me so...) I like to think that God gives us reminders of His promises everywhere, we just have to take the time to look and appreciate. So I hope all you have some time today to appreciate the smallest of gifts...the taste of something yummy, the hug of a loved one, the joy of just living!!
Thanks for praying and caring! You are all such blessings to my family and I!

We hope everyone had a great of a weekend like us...Friday night we had supper with some special friends. Sat morning we cleaned (I was even able to do a fair share of it, just had to sit and rest every 10-15 min...good thing Ferlin has so much patience.) Just a few more kitchen cupboards to do and spring cleaning will be done...and just in case you think that we are really on the ball...nope, I just don't want anyone to see how messy I can be...with Ferlin's busy season coming up and chemo, I may have to accept the offer of help with some of the household stuff. Saturday afternoon we were blessed with Cade and Casie spending some time with us. (Two of my sister Bobbi's children)...the weather was in the 50's (a wonderful treat for January in South Dakota) and we went to the falls for a walk. Casie was so correct when she kept saying "it is so pretty"...we had so much fun with them and can't wait for them to come visit again. Saturday night we had a pizza party with Tammy and Bobbi's family...what a great night. Sunday we went to church and than I had a rare treat of spending a few hours with one of my dearest friends. There is nothing like spending an afternoon with a girlfriend! Sunday night Kalina and Steven came over and had supper. We are so blessed having them in the area this spring.
Today is a day of praises....I had my last visit to the plastic surgeon until after chemo treatments...so although I am having pain now, hoping that after a few days that should lessen. Figure that am 1/3 of way done with treatment!! Tonight Allen and Denise (our pastor and his wife) came over for a visit. They were able to provide us with some insight, comfort and peace for the journey that lies ahead. I know I have said it before, but I am truely blessed with the love of friends and family.
Thank you all for checking in on us...your love, support and prayers are such great encouragement! I can't wait for the day when I can "pass it on" and give to you like you have given to us!
The count down has begun....9 days to the big "C" day.

I have always prided myself with a really good memory and being pretty organized and on top of things…but this week I made a few oops in that department…first of all, I sent out the wrong location for our Tuesday ladies lunch group, good thing Mike caught my oops…than the next day I was supposed to be bringing Kelsey to school, pulled into my work parking lot and realized I forgot to drop her off…too bad it wasn’t Take your daughter to work day…can I claim “chemo” brain before chemo??
I was having a lot of pain on the left side this week, we didn’t know if it was from my last fill of the expanders, or if I over did it. Ferlin wondered if it was because I use my left arm to pull myself up into the pickup…so he kindly surprised me with taking my mustang out of storage to use (until the snow falls again)…he even brought it to my work and exchanged vehicles…what a great guy!
Thanks Jody for the great lunch, I cherish our talks and time together. Thanks Linda and Alan for spending time with Kelsey and for the supper, it was greatly appreciated. Thanks Pam and Lisa for the cards, Lisa the kids look great! Everyone’s kindness is very appreciated.
5 days to go…
Not for sure what to write…
It seems like when a person is first diagnosed with a life threatening disease, life stops for a bit, than there is a flurry of appts, and than the wait… So, although this past week went really fast, the thought of the next 6 months weighed heavy on my heart. What is it going to be like? How sick am I going to get? How lonely is going to be? Will I be able to stick with my plan on working? How am I going to be a mom? Wife? Friend? Sister? Daughter? Employee? After thinking and praying about all these questions, I take great comfort in knowing that I have the answer that I need for ALL questions: God is my strength and I have all of you for my earthly support. This will carry my family and I through the next 6 months. What a comfort!
Thank you for your prayers and support as we continue this journey. Chemo scares me and I know your prayers will carry me on Wednesday. Please also join us in praying for all the little ones who are fighting illnesses right now, we have several friends and family with little ones that are ill. It is tough to be a parent with sick little ones. Thank-you all! Blessings on your weekend!
Ps…remember to enjoy the gift of todayJ

Hi everyone! Just thought I would send a quick hello as I don't know if I am going to get a chance to post before chemo tomorrow. We had a relatively quiet weekend at our home. My stamina isn't up to par yet, so I did chores and than I sat and rested. Still struggle with the back pain, but did meet with a cancer exercise specialists yesterday and she showed me some stretching exercises. Ferlin and I went on a date Saturday night to one of my most favorite places: Barnes and Nobles. My sister, Bobbi, had given me a gift card so I was able to get a book. So far, from what I have read, this book should help keep me in the right frame of mind for my next step in our journey. Thought I would share the opening paragraph with you all as it really helped me refocus. The book is called Just Enough Light for the Step I'm On by Stormie Omartian.
More and more, God is teaching me to trust Him for every step I take. He constantly calls me to stretch beyond what's comortable. To walk through new territory when I would rather stay with the familiar. To face difficult physical, mental, and emotional challenges. To do things I know I can't achieve by myself without His power. Each time something is required of me that I'm certain I am unable to accomplish in my own strength., I see a picture of just one or two steps being illuminated, while those before and after are engulfed in darkness and cannot be seen. This describes my walk with God. I trust Him for each day of life, grateful for every breath, determined to look for the blessing in the moment, no matter what the circumstances. I follow His lead--even when I can't see where I'm going, even when it scares me to do so--because deep within my spirit I know that these simple steps of faith are preparing me for eternity.
I couldn't have said it better. As much as I trust, the next six months do scare me and going through chemo is probable one of the hardest things I have had to go through. I am so blessed to have others walking with me through this journey.
We have to be at our appt at 1030 tomorrow, visit with the doctor and labs, with chemo to follow. They had told me the first visit usually lasts 5 to 6 hours. I will try and update Thursday or Friday.
Thanks again for all your prayers, love and support!
